The Times today had a special section on yesterday's Autumn Statement. One article asserts "Signal boxes vanish in trains' digital upgrade" - and illustrates it with a picture of Bewdley North!

Perhaps it was the only photo of a 'box they could find, you know how awful the press can be with their articles.

Just goes to show that someone in the media doesn't keep up with the times.

An alternative theory is that so many manual boxes have already closed that if you need a quick phot you use a preserved one.

Look at the speed Kidder and Henley boxes were demolished

I think it's more to do, with that the old wooden signal boxes that operated semaphore signals, are the stereotype of a manual and slow age, compared to the speedy supa-dupa digital age. You know how the press like to sensationalise. Rolling Eyes

Could this be a golden opportunity for Marketing to write a letter to the editor of The Times to put matters into perspective? Free publicity?

With some 500 proposed redundant boxes, I wonder if railfans will be able to buy one as a weekend retreat. I assume they have toilet facilities, and being on railway land would not presumably be subject to Council planning restrictions. Although the operating company's would not be happy with allowing the public such close track side access.

In my part of the world stations either closed or with restricted service can be leased by the public.

I think Mr Hunter is being optimistic re the facilities provided in signal boxes, if the SVR is anything to go by.
Out of 7 boxes, only 2 have toilet facilities, and I'm not sure that the one in Bewdley South is in working order.

Assuming you're referring to the hut behind Bewdley South (there's no indoor facilities!), it's not currently in use.

As I said Danny, and if you're on duty there, I assume you are less of a tea drinker than a brass polisher !!

It may not be in use, but it is on the Wyre Forest District Council Local Heritage List Cool

Presume it was built to a "bog standard" design?

When it was use, did the effluent go into a cesspit or into the public sewers?
