5000, the National Railway Museum's Black 5, was a fairly regular performer on the SVR from 1979 up until the end of 1988 when it was withdrawn from service. It returned to the NRM's care in 1990.

Here are some clips of it in service on the SVR on 20th August 1988.

And now for a bit of fun..

Here's another clip of 5000, this time leaving Northwood Halt. Can anyone identify the driver?

The same driver is seen a week earlier on 21st August 1988. This time he was on 8233 and is seen approaching Eardington summit after leaving Bridgnorth. My camera work is even more dodgy than usual on this clip as I was so impressed with the performance, I felt compelled to give a thumbs up to the driver and almost fell over backwards in my excitement Laughing

And in case anyone's wondering, I did have a lineside pass at the time.. Very Happy

Thanks very much. Smile I've always suspected it was Jim, but have never been 100% certain.

I think someone who is up to date with current SVR policy needs to answer that one. In 1987/8 I remember having to apply formally and it was signed off by the General Manager. I have no idea what the current policy is as I have not been 'lineside' since 1991.

You have to be a member first, which costs 15pa, then it's 25 pa for the lineside pass.

Contact the main office on 01299 403816.

I certainly had some good days with 5000.

I particularly remember coming back as owner's rep from Manchester to Bridgnorth light engine after Rainhill, with a night stop on Northwich shed. Amazing to think how long ago that was.

The fact is, tho, that there are so many Black 5s preserved that it is probably bottom of the NRM's list of priorities to get it working, and as for the SVR, we've got 5110. even when it comes 'out-of-ticket' in August.

I remember discussing 5000 and 5110 some a good few years ago with Tony Pirie he said that 5000 was a very strong engine but that it's riding was much worse than 5110.

I was on the Blackcountryman special and remember the noise it was making going round Manchester 13 on and dragging 80079 which was no use at all because of low water level.

Happy days

Dave

A reasonable loco, one which the NRM are unlikely to release, especially back to SVR. The loco requires frame repairs and very 'heavy' boilerwork, as the loco still carries an original nickel steel, straight throatplate, non domed boiler. Unless you have 500k stashed away....

5000 has its original frames so it was inclined to go rough as opposed to 45110 which has later frames and rides better.

As a matter of interest aren't the boilers on these two similar.
IO remember seeing a picture of 45110 in the early 50's with a boiler with both dome and top feed

Cheers Dave
