Noticed today that there is a Black Five tender in the yard. Does anyone know what its off (45110?) and what its here for?

it certainly is off 45110 and it is to go behind 42968 due to its own tender needing some repairs...

shame it's for 42968 --- I'd been looking forward to seeing it behind Erlestoke instead of the borrowed tender !!!
That WOULD upset the purists !!!

I appreciate that the answer to this question is subject to all sorts of variables and imponderables but any idea how long 'til the Fowler tender will be back?

Only a personal opinion so don't quote me, but the tender tyres are already quite thin and I'm not sure they'll stand another turning. It might be while.

So my excitement about a Black Five for the summer or the start of 45110's overhaul turned out to be neither. Sad - will be interesting to see it paired up with 42968 though!

Not the first time that 42968 has been paired with 45110's tender.

Seem to recall a few mainline trips in the late 1990's with this combination.

The Central Wales Adventurer, 1Z30 05.20 ex-Newport, 2968 from Shrewsbury - Llandrindod Wells - Newport, 3rd January 1998, approaching Llangunllo Tunnel on the southbound 1:60 gradient.

The train was forced to reverse back to Craven Arms at Llandrindod Wells due to flooded track southwards, and then ran over the Welsh Marches route instead.

Was that really 12 years ago? I was on the footplate from Hereford to Newport, on a line that of course we weren't even booked to go on. I recall that the overall speed limit was interpreted rather liberally.....

did lms moguls eva have say like the black 5's stanier's tender during mainline day and also black 5's having Fowler tenders? I also seen a clip of Princess Lizzy having a fowler tender when she was brand new.

The answers to what I think you're asking: no LMS 2-6-0 (Ireland excluded) ever ran with a Stanier tender in LMS or BR days; and no Black Five ever ran with a Fowler tender. The tenders originally fitted to 6200 and 6201 were not Fowler (strictly speaking, nor were the others) but the first of the Stanier ones, despite appearances. They had the longer wheelbase, 4,000 gallon water and nine tons coal capacities of Stanier types. In common with the Fowler type, the coal didn't trim well, and the bunker shape was modified to improve this, the tops being curved inwards at the same time.
