Does anyone happen to know who/what the recordings are actually for? Clearly a fairly large project if they've got a whole train out.

It was hired by Armstrong Powerhouse (a company that makes sound packs and add ons for Train Simulator 2014) for sound recording for a western sound pack.

Here's a pic of D1062 with a special headboard at KDR (sorry it's facebook)

This is very good news indeed. I have the Class 52 add-on for TS14 and whilst the graphics are not too bad, the engine sounds are not that good and the horn is nothing short of pathetic!

I see that D1062 is booked to appear at the Derby Etches Park open day on Saturday 13 September. As it is operating on the SVR all week, does this mean it will be travelling light engine directly to Derby late on Friday or early Saturday?

I think you will find that it is D1015 Western Champion that is attending.

Over the weekend work as continued on D1062 with cleaning of A end where the exhausters sit. After cleaning the exhausters we found that the filler pip was loose on both exhausters causing oil to leak out. Also after removing the cams from the cambox off A end engine we found that the bush that sits in the cambox closest to the gear train had started to pickup and had seized onto the camshaft. If this was to be left then the shaft would have seized and sheared the gear off the end (as what happened 3 years back at Arley). So we removed the camshafts and placed them into a new cambox.

WLA Forum (public) 28/01/2015 http://www.westernloco.com/forum//viewtopic.php?t=422 has news of winter overhaul and repairs:

Quote:
During 2014, D1062 Western Courier probably had her most successful and intensively used year ever at the Severn Valley Railway covering all of her scheduled turns, driver experience courses and also running extra dates to cover the unavailability of D821 Greyhound. Unfortunately for 1062, this intensive use has resulted in an increased winter maintenance requirement to ensure her continued availability in 2015.

D1062 developed two main issues during 2014 which required investigation at the start of her winter maintenance program. The first was a consistent oil leak onto 'A' end bogie, (Secondmans side). This had to be regularly cleaned off from the bogie to minimise any possible fire risk during brake applications. Preliminary investigations showed the source of the oil leak appeared to be from the vacuum exhausters within the loco. Further investigation necessitated the removal of 'A' end cooler group to gain access to the two Westinghouse exhausters.

Secondly, 'A' end transmission started to suffer from converter problems, including the double filling of two torque converters at once requiring intervention by the drivers to limit any strain on the transmission that this defect causes during operation of the loco. Preliminary investigation of 'A' transmission suggested that the transmission governor was at fault. Access to the governor is limited and it was planned that whilst the cooler group was out of the locomotive, the governor will need to be repaired by Voith in Germany. There will be several weeks lead time in the repair of the governor.

Finally, and to our surprise, routine engine inspection at the end of the running season found that the oil pressure to the one camshaft box on 'A' engine was below acceptable limits. This has required partial strip of 'A' engine and removal of the cambox from the one bank of the engine. The cambox has since been stripped down to try and identify the cause of the low oil pressure. Unfortunately, this investigation has found damage to the exhaust camshaft of the engine where the front support bearing bushes have seized to the front bearing journal of the camshaft. Further investigation has revealed that after seizure of the camshaft bearing bushes to the camshaft, the bearing bushes have spun in their housing. The ensuing damage caused by this has effectively written off the cambox and the camshaft. This will now require extensive work to 'A' engine including the complete replacement of the cambox assembly absorbing valuable time and spares.

At a recent “working members” meeting the whole situation regarding D1062 was assessed including the timescale to undertake the repairs, which is likely to take until the end of May 2015. It was therefore agreed that although there was a commitment by drivers and supporting engineers to attend both Swanage Railway and Didcot events with D1062, the loco itself would not be ready in time to support these two events in 2015.

The decision to withdraw 1062 from these events was not taken lightly and much time was taken to explore all the available options to see if 1062 could be made ready in time. Therefore, it is with regret that we wish to formally announce that D1062 Western Courier will not attend both the Swanage Diesel Gala and the Didcot events in 2015. The locomotive should however, be able to continue to operate on the SVR

We very much regret that the WLA has to announce that during the Annual FTR Exam on D1062 Western Courier, a fault with a Centre Axle Box was discovered. As a consequence, D1062 will be unable to enter traffic on the Severn Valley Railway on time for 2015 running season and will NOT be operating Saturday 30th March (“C” Timetable) [sic - should be May] and Monday 1st to Friday 5th June (“A” Timetable). A decision on availability for further running days will be made once additional examinations of the fault have been carried out. Please be assured that the WLA are already working very hard to investigate the fault and determine a plan of action to return D1062 to Traffic. Further announcements regarding availability will be made in due course.
We are sure that everyone will appreciate that safety is of paramount importance and that we need to ensure that potential damage to the locomotive is avoided.
As always, we appreciate your support and understanding.
Many Thanks,
Western Locomotive Association
