After 15 months of work the SVR Rolling Stock Trust reached the point when it could put in a claim to M.L.A. for a PRISM grant. In response it had payment of £9,251 which covers the materials for the rebuilt bodyshell in the first year of the build. Work then turned to rebuilding the current south end gangway tunnel, which by the end of October was ready to receive the bellows that has been held in stock for the last three years. Preparatory work on the ironmongery for the north end has also begun and will continue through November. The roof has been completed up to the penultimate coat of gloss, so that the safety harness arrangement could be taken down on 6 November. This will allow work to start on reconstruction of the north tunnel as the reconditioned parts become ready. Detailed woodwork has been ongoing during the month to provide the large radiused curved pieces that form the eaves. These have taken quite a lot of trial fitting and shaping to ensure a watertight joint. Also the timber retainers for the guards ducket glasses have had to be hand made. On LMS duckets they seem to have been custom-made as a kit, and none of the others on SVR based LMS brakes match each other! All of the glasses are slightly different in each case by small degrees.

LMS 6 wheeled passenger Brake 2886 continues to make good progress at Bridgnorth. The Guard’s door has been rebuilt, using a frame from corridor third 13045, scrapped at Bridgnorth back in the 70s. A salvaged door lock from Stove R 33002 that SVR vounteers broke up at Didcot last year has been overhauled to the 2010 SVR standards book, and is the first of the type to be so treated. Hinges also from 33002 have been machined and repinned, and those off 2886 will be treated similarly. Any surplus reconditioned hinges at the end of the project will be put into stores for use on the rest of the fleet. The Guard’s duckets are now both complete, so that 2886 is now fully glazed throughout, for the first time in at least two decades. The South end gangway was completed during the month and work on reconditioning components for the other one continues, with assembly expected during February

A special treat today was working on this vehicle.

My brother and I turned up to work on the station, and did a bit of painting, but with the numbers on the station there was a limit to what we could do.

Alan, Dave Millward and Martin were working on 2886 so we offered a hand, tightening the new screws on the guttering and trimming the mastic, grinding down screw heads that were proud, filling and flattening them, and priming and painting the guttering.

Alan and Dave were doing the same on the bodyside, and Martin was working on the North end (reconstruction of the north tunnel?).

We also helped dismantle one of the scrap doors from Stove R 33002 that SVR volunteers broke up at Didcot last year for spares.

All good fun! Thanks to the Bridgnorth C&W crew for letting us help and showing us what to do
