I did read somewhere that track alterations were being made at Cardiff & they wanted to clear as much stock as possible during that time, there was no implication the 50s would not return.

The site is being redeveloped at Canton and so as much room as possible is needed there to allow the depot to continue to operate while the alterations are made.

Joe: Re diesels and KDR, you posted in another place last month that the website would shortly be updated with news. Anything yet you can share with us, either here or in the private forum?

Thanks.

Dave Redbourne on Preserved Diesels Facebook site has commented 50049 has all its liners back in, and it is hoped that 44's new engine will be craned in the first week of November.

Loco Latest

50049: Is part way through a power unit over haul to correct leaking liners. GSM-R has been fitted and the loco will then be available for mainline use, once the power unit work is completed. The Fifty Fund are still appealing for sponsorship for 50049's recent bogie overhaul

Brief update on 50049, it now has all it's 16 reconditioned pistons installed, complete with all new piston rings, together with new big & little end bearings. 8 overhauled heads have been dropped in, with the balance undergoing overhaul for fitting in the near future (hopefully!!)

All 8 heads now torqued down, exhaust & coolant pipes fitted to those heads. All big end bolts, bar one troublesome one torqued up. Significant progress.

50049 underwent an engine lift at Kidderminster on May 1 in order for a main generator swap to be undertaken. The old one being due for overhaul was replaced by a freshly overhauled one all in one day. This was a task that would have taken several days back in the Class 50's BR careers so 'hats off' to the Fifty Fund / Class 50 Alliance volunteers. 50049 should now return to use later this summer
