Travelling on BN1 from Hampton Loade to Bridgnorth and then back to Kiddy today, I saw two lineside fires: the first one was on the small side and was in the cutting between Hay Bridge and Eardington Halt, and the second was on the Bewdley side of the tunnel and looked larger.

The vegetation must be getting quite dry as three embankment fires reported in the Shuttle. One fire categorised as huge!
Here is the link to the Shuttle that includes six photographs:- http://www.kidderminstershuttle.co.uk/news/local/15280870.IN_PICTURES__Third_Bewdley_railway_embankment_fire_this_week/

Can diesels cause dry grassland to catch fire with hot soot coming out of the exhaust?

....and the rains came...!

Seriously though, talking to a Herefordshire farmer who came out a couple of days ago to collect a bee swarm from the hedge in my garden, he was absolutely desperate for rain, he had planted thousands of new fruit trees and berry bushes over the past six weeks or so, and was in danger of losing them if it didn't rain.

Judging by what we had yesterday and overnight, his prayers are answered.

More likely to be sparks from brake blocks than anything coming out of the exhaust!

I remember back in the 1970's, sticking my head of the door window I got some hot grit on my hand and face, the diesel loco was throwing out a lot of clag, I always presumed it came from the exhaust.

Back in the 70s when I lived near Bristol, occasional "Mystery Tours" were run from Temple Meads. Fortunately they weren't a mystery to me as I knew somebody that could tell me the destination. One of them went to Paignton - for me a suitable destination! Anyway, on the way back, I looked out of the door window as the Western pulled away from Paignton and thrashed up the bank, then I noticed amongst all the black exhaust there appeared to be "sparks" shooting skywards.

I've seen three recently apart from those in the article. The fire brigade were attending to a fire on the lineside at Bewdley Airport on Saturday 22nd April, which has rather scorched the foreground for the classic photo of locos climbing towards the tunnel. On Sunday 30th April we stopped twice for the footplate crew to put out other smaller ones further north. Last night's rain was a help, but unless we get a lot more it will be tinder dry again within days.

The very hot weather is causing problems. Fire reported near the tunnel (Bewdley) in Express & Star.
