Just had another "play". Thought I ought to try moving the test wiki to a different url. This also meant copying the mysql database & setting up a new one. Some of the settings such as database name & password also had to be changed.

Anyway, it all worked. The original is still there & working, the new one - which is a copy of the old one, is also working.

So I have proved a working wiki can be copied and moved. This would be of use if "person a" gave up hosting it & passed it on to "person b".

The copy is at:- DELETED

EDIT as mentioned in a previous post, my wikis were abandoned & deleted

I'd be happy to contribute, but don't have the time to take on any administrative function (nor to learn how).

After the false start this summer (I think we were all too busy with real trains!), Graham Phillips (graham), sharpo, and myself have created www.svrwiki.com. Having done a fair bit of tinkering, fiddling, and discovering just how much there is to add, it's hopefully now safe to open it up to the wider world!

The idea of the site is to be a collaborative effort to collect SVR information, history, and events, much like the Festiniog Railway's very successful Festipedia (https://www.festipedia.org.uk), which has over 2000 articles and users.

At this point, the SVR wiki is rather modest, featuring a couple of larger articles, a lot of smaller ones, and even more yet to be created waiting for your knowledge and contributions. There should be no problem in uploading your own images as well, although be a bit careful about using the images of others - many people are quite happy to say "yes" once you ask their permission, as long as they are credited, but otherwise you're better off linking to their image.

You currently have to register to edit the wiki, but otherwise it should be fairly easy. Feel free to mention any problems or suggestions you have - although it may well be better for you to implement your suggestion yourself, if you can!

It's thanks to the original poster (Graham) that this topic has been revived. My input has been minimal, just helping with what I learned a few months months ago when I set up a test wiki. Dan has done much of the background work in the last few days after Graham started the ball rolling again by setting up a new wiki.

I'm sure there is much information about the SVR history which could be added that would be of interest, and maybe a weekly diary of events as they happen in the future would be of useful before they are "forgotten".

A couple of topics that spring to mind are items of stock that used to be based at the SVR and those which have visited for galas and other events.

Much as I would like to, I won't be able to find the time to contribute much in the way of content. I'm probably office junior to Dan after what he has done the last few days.

One thing I did learn is that there are plenty of spammers out there, be they human or robot. It didn't take long for one of my "public" test wikis to get spammed big time. So, watch out, keep your eye on the pressure gauge, water level or whatever, if anybody spots spam pages or links to the wrong sort of "stuff", then let somebody know. I copped for many thousands of pages and over 2Gb of data added to my wiki. In the end I just deleted it, as it was only a test with minimal data.

As many of you probably know, I've loads of SVR photos - but don't panic, I'm not going to flood the wiki with them, as there is no point in showing them here & in my galleries. I did remember setting up four galleries for Arley, Eardington, Hampton Loade & Highley many years ago - so have added a link from the station page in the wiki to the appropriate gallery.

I also starting setting up a list of SVR stock photos, but only got as far as coaching stock. So when somebody gets around to setting up a list of coaches on the wiki, if they want to link to relevant photos in my blog- it can easily be done.

Main page http://www.sharpos-world.co.uk/blog/?page_id=1025

From that link, you can work your way through the list of stock to get a page something like this, showing photo (or photos) of a particular coach:-
http://www.sharpos-world.co.uk/blog/?page_id=1130

Contributors may wish to use their own images instead, but at least I've made some of my images easily available.

No doubt some bright spark might suggest I compile the list myself! But I don't seem to have enough hours in the day to do that, or maybe the steam pressure is low & I'm going slower than I used to????? (Anybody else know what I'm waffling about?)

I noticed on the goods wagon list that the bogie wagons at the bottom of the page were linked to a photo, so have done the same with 2504 at the top of the page.

http://www.svrwiki.com/Goods_Wagons

So, question - is this the sort of thing people want, and what would someone do if they had a more recent or better image to add, or what if several photos of the same wagon were required?

Better to have some idea of guide lines of what to do earlier, rather than have to make lots of alterations at a later date.

I added those two links as I was still experimenting with lists, tables, links, pages and so on.
I think now it would be best if each wagon (and locomotive, carriage, signal box etc.) has it's own page, linked from the relevant list.
That page could then have information on the item and a photo, plus links to external sites and photos.
I've created a page, minus the photo, for the second wagon on the list as an example.

Agreed that it would be best to agree on a consistent format for all pages.

At the moment, I'm mostly creating new pages with links and single sentence.
My reasoning is that we haven't got many editors yet and many people may not feel confident about creating and formatting a page, but if they find an almost blank page on a subject they have some knowledge of, they may be more inclined to contribute if all they've got to do is add some text.

Just checked photo you linked to on my pc & it works, but shows 2504 instead of 82554. Easily fixed later, just off out now....

Perhaps the link to the image could be put in the "Notes" section of the table, if you don't feel like creating a short page at the time? I do agree that it would be nice to (eventually!) create a page for each wagon, though.

All credit to those creating this Wiki. Way beyond my skillset!!!

Had a quick look and there will clearly be time for tidying up as it proceeds, but I have noticed a couple of points.

On the list of preservation groups, would it be better if some consistency in the way the loco class, type or number is shown. For example, Bradley, Erlestoke and Hinton Manors and Hagley Hall, are not given numbers, but 5164 and 4150 gives origin and class type.

It also shows Friends of Hagley Hall as owners, as well as SVR(H). There is a also no mention of 75069.

If I were technical I'm sure that I might have a go at updating this myself, but as it is I fear that any change I might make will crash the system and ruin all the hard work already carried out.

I'm happy to say your fear is somewhat misplaced! You have about as much chance of breaking the wiki by modifying a page as you do of crashing this forum when making a post.

The software itself is incredibly robust, and is identical to that used to run Wikipedia, which has many more people editing it each day - and I suspect also quite a few people trying very hard to break it, and they don't seem to have succeeded yet.

Each revision of a page is saved by the software, meaning that it is very simple to revert to an earlier version of the page if you accidentally manage to delete all the text or similar - this also makes it quite easy to clean up any malicious acts. We've also got regular backups of the website running, just in case something goes really wrong.

This was a strange one, I got it working correctly in Firefox, but using chrome it still showed the wrong wagon - even after clearing the cache.

So then I used the url of the wagon photo from the album into which it was originally added to. That seems to work, so must make a note to check using different browsers, just in case one gives different results to the others.

Early days still, but mentioning it here will make others aware of what could happen occasionally. The more we know now, the fewer problems we have in future.

This is way beyond my skill set too, I'm still winging it.
Danny has posted some pretty comprehensive instructions on how to create or edit a page on the wiki.
I can appreciate that some people won't want to make an official edit, for whatever reason, so a simpler, if less direct method would be to click on the "Discussion" tab at the top left of every page and make your additions, suggestions or corrections there.
Discussion pages are not part of the main wiki as such, they are not normally read other than by someone specifically looking for them, so just type away and don't worry about the correct format.
Hopefully, someone will find it, probably by clicking on the "Recent Changes" link on the left, and edit the page.

Failing that, there's a fairly long thread elsewhere on here pointing out errors on the main SVR web site.
You could always use this thread in the same way to provide information, then let someone else do the editing.

The list of preservation groups is a bit hard to follow like that.
I think I'll turn it in to a table and make some corrections.
