Website:

The Severn Valley Railway will receive an early Christmas present in November in the shape of visiting former British Railways 'Spaceship' No. 92214.

Currently based on the Great Central Railway, and owned by Cromwell Group (Holdings) Ltd, the newly re-painted Brunswick Green '9F' will arrive in late November for a visit to help cover the intensive Christmas services operating throughout December, before returning to Leicestershire in January 2015.

In its current lined green livery, the locomotive strongly resembles the appearance of the last ever steam locomotive built in Britain, No. 92220 Evening Star.

A member of the famed '9F' class which was one of the most powerful designs of locomotive ever built in Britain and given the nickname 'Spaceships', No. 92214 was built in 1959 and operated heavy goods trains until it was withdrawn in 1965.

Keep an eye on our 'Meet our Locomotives' page for all the latest on No. 92214's arrival on SVR metals.

I remember when 92212 visited in 2011 there were several times when 'What bank?' could be applied to it leaving Highley.

I suppose the next question is will the railway have to hire in a loco for next year's main season?

Personally, I would be very surprised if we don't have a hire loco for next season. Unless either 34027 or 7802 are ready in time for June (which I cant see happening, although I do know rapid progress is being made on 7802) then a hire loco will be a necessity in order to continue running the required level of service.

I know the timescale for 34027 being done has been more variable than the British weather, but I thought that opinion was pretty strong she'd make it out by Spring or so?

'Required'? And I thought 7802's boiler was been done at Bridgnorth or has that changed?

Required to work a train requiring an air braked loco. In the absence of WD600 it's the only steam loco with air brakes on the SVR.
Most of 7802 boiler overhaul was done at Bridgnorth, think it's gone away to have 'bits' welded in. I'm not part of the EMF so can't confirm.

Yes, I'm aware of the event on 15th (anyone who went to the SVR(G) AGM would have heard about it) though it doesn't necessary mean the work will be done any quicker. It'll be done when it's done.

O/T The boiler for 7802 is currently & briefly with a regular subcontractor to SVR Eng to complete particular repairs to the steel outer firebox. It is due to return to Bridgnorth for completion shortly. The target is a return to service early in the 2015 season.

92214 is in use this weekend.
There was a possibility that 34053 wouldn't be ready after repairs, and that 1450 and 4566 double-headed would be used, but it's evidently been fixed.
Full details of locos in use now on http://svr.co.uk/MeetTheLoco.aspx?id=87
