Taw Valley Status Update - As of 10/02/06

Smokebox stripped; (suspect a new one will be needed). Main steam pipes cleaned and painted. All boiler tubes are out and scrapped, ready for boiler to be lifted and sent to Roger Pridham. Cab and fittings mostly removed. Awaiting arrival of two ex-EWS BGs to allow storage of components and, more importantly, the cladding.... Accomodation bogies have been delivered; awaiting frames lift to free up driving wheelsets and pony trucks. These will be sent to Ian Rileys for tyre fitting. Barry Gambles manufacturing new vacumm brake valve to replace current South African one.

It's great to be kept up to date with whats going on so thanks!

Just a question with the work going on with taw valley whats happening to the restoration order/que? What likely to be next after 4556 and 7812 and maybe the 2-8-0? (sorry forgot the number)?

Or are they going to finish Taw valley before they start the next thing(s)??

Alex

Phil may want to correct me on this, but 34027 is a contact job, so isn't part of 'the queue' as such.

That is correct. It is being done as a contract job.

BOILER.
1) Lifted out of the frames.
2) All tubes and tube ends cut out of tube plates.
3) Firebox has been needle gunned to remove all rust to enable a good examination.
4) A few stays have been removed to enable an assessment of plate thickness.

FRAMES.
1) Connecting rods taken off all 3 engines.
2) Coupling rods taken off both sides.
3) All Sanding gear removed.
4) All brake rigging removed.
5) Running plate above LH cylinder.
6) Front LH foot steps and plate work.
7) Vacuum train pipe above LH cylinder.

LH CYLINDER.
1) Valves removed.
2) Piston removed.
3) Both valve covers and both cylinder covers.
4) Exhaust bellows/pipe and steam pipe extension.
5) All cylinder cladding and lagging.
6) All cylinder lubrication pipe work.
7) We have started removing some of the cylinder bolts. 10 out of 42 are out. The cylinder should be on the ground late Monday or Early Tuesday morning. Depending on how much of a fight they are prepared to offer.

A quote for the new cylinder has been obtained and we will be using Cerdic foundries Chard. See http://www.cerdicfoundries.co.uk/

And doubtless the pattern (serious money) will prove useful to other owners of Mr OVS Bullieds light-weight pacifics in due course.

Congratulations Phil on having the vision to invest, thus enabling these machines can continue to operate even as major parts become life expired.

Incidentally Phil, are the L & R cylinders handed or is the casting the same for both sides?

Missing a cylinder at the moment Taw Valley reminds me of when I saw Duke of Gloucester at Barry.

I wonder how many of us who saw it there said "can't be done".

Its nice to be wrong sometimes.

Hi Phil,

What is the latest progress? What is the target completion date?

Do you mind telling us the significance of 'Ottery St. Mary'? Will she return as 34027, or 34045?
