Hi
Is there any chance someone can give some information on the diesels at the svr and if they are servicable or not and if they are able to run on the mainline. I have checked the stock register site but it seams abit out off data.

HinAlex

There was a thread in the locos section under 'main line diesels on SVR' - my lasst posting was Oct 2005:

'see http://www.svrstockonline.co.uk/, but the 25 has left, 2 EDs have arrived and the 35 has returned. See also http://www.preserved-diesels.co.uk/railways/severn_valley.htm
Excluding shunters therefore:

D821 Greyhound Class 42 Operational [UPDATED BY SUBSEQUENT POSTER: NON-OPERATIONAL WITH CONTROL CUBICLE OUT OF ACTION]
D1013 Western Ranger Class 52 Operational
D1062 Western Courier Class 52 Undergoing renovation
D444 Exeter Class 50 Operational
D4150 Class 27 Under repair
D7029 class 35 hymek, recently returned, under renovation
37906 stored
E6005/6 - Class 73 Electro-diesls - operational

50031, 50035 and D449 are I think all now at Old Oak Common'.

Apart from the Hoovers none are mainline certified.

.....unless someone knows different!

A couple of links mght be useful:

http://www.preserved-diesels.co.uk/news/index.htm

http://www.westernloco.com/ - shameless plug for Western Loco Association with updates on progress of D1062 overhaul and beg for 10k funds to complete overhaul - and drive for more members!

Hope this is helpful

50035 "Ark Royal" is awaiting a generator repair and is engine-out at Old Oak Common.

50031 "Hood" is operating out of Cardif and is on hire for mainline duties.
50049 "Defiance" is operating out of Cardiff and is on hire for mainline duties.

50044 "Exeter" is operating at the SVR and is planned for mainline during 2006 although this depends upon 50035 replacing it for SVR Duties.

E6005/6 - One of these (unsure which) has a probable siezed turbo and is not operational.

So are the 50s still nominally SVR resident locos? It seems as though only D444 is on site at present. Will the others come back to Kiddy, or are operations based out of Old Oak Common now?

With the plans to return D444 to the mainline during 2006, the Fifty Fund & Project Defiance (aka The 50 Alliance) will be looking at ways to return 50035 to SVR duties as soon as external generator work is completed. However, we may see the situation whereby we rotate the 50's between mainline and SVR duties.

Of course the groups long term ambitions still remain to have 4 mainline 50's available for hire.

31 & 49 have the required safety equipment i.e. TPWS
44 has TPWS but needs the design bringing into line with the other 2.
35 doesn't currently have any mainline required equipment.

OTMR is the next big project, but moves are afoot !

Paul

Sorry Paul,

Forgive my ignorance, but what is OTMR?

On Train Monitoring & Recording (OTMR) or black box as it is known.

This box monitors the power handle position, speed, braking etc etc in order to provide information should an incident occur.

Modern locos and units already have the system fitted. They can be used to monitor driver performance (big brother is watching). Retro fitting to an older loco such as a Class 50 is from what I understand relatively straight forward. Because 50's have electronic control (drive by wire) circuits, it is a matter of working out how to take feeds from the existing circuitry to give the information required i.e. when the driver opens the power handle, the output level from the control circuit tells you what position the handle is in. Therefore, if a loco is reported at overspeed, you could in theory tell if the driver had reduced power and applied the brake. See what I mean about "Big Brother". I am not 100% sure about what information is collated, as it may differ for older locos, but it is a mainline running requirment from 2007 I think. The big question is how do you retro fit to steam locos if required?

All to do with the blame culture in the UK if you ask me !!

Regards
Paul

Myself and young george went to vanfest the weekend. We didn't see a camper in br large logo blue (although we saw one that had a paint job that looked very similar to a german livery), so i have set myself the task of persuading my dad to paint the camper into this livery (if thats what i can call it on a camper) and perhaps numbering it 50051. Any name suggestions will be appreciated.

I see from here: http://www.preserved-diesels.co.uk/news/index.htm that 50044 is being collected from Kidder about now to go to Crewe to be readied for main line work. If this true, what plans are there to base a working 50 in the SVR?

Adrian.

You are correct Mr Hassle, but she will be back with in the next couple of weeks ready to do her turns on the valley. 37906 will also run along side D821 and a 52 from Bridgnorth for the Diesel turns in 07.

Cheers
