They were preparing it for tomorrow!! Little problem today, which is why it was takin back to Bridgnorth and never made Kidder!!

Aiming for the booked times?

Just wondering if it will just run as far as the loop at Kidder or continue under the footbridge and into the station. I've been caught out on that before with other locos, just a distant shot as it waited for the road back to Bewdley.

EDIT - can't get to Kidder Thursday morning, so it's probably guaranteed to run!!

The superb image on nat-pres of 46100 ex-works in Bridgnorth yard takes me back to Crewe in the late '50s, when groups of ex-works engines were tripped round from the works to Crewe south shed. None would be in steam, just the hiss from open drain cocks, and gleaming paintwork.

There is a comparable image of an ex-works Scot, actually 46170, in the colour centrespread of David Jenkinson's "The Power of the Royal Scots"book.

Finally got the video from today uploaded. The arrival at Kidder is tender first, then I play around with some zoom shots from the footbridge. Loco then heads back towards Bridgnorth

To skip the zoom shots, go to 2m 45secs for the departure.

https://youtu.be/IuxBlylQENc

You can tell I like messing with those long zoom shots!!

Video evidence and discussion on another forum are about a sort of electric motor "whine" which is quite apparent when 46100 passes by.

Someone has suggested "machining marks" on the the loco tyres, but I would have thought this was unlikely, because when you see a set of freshly turned loco wheels, the tread usually looks shiny smooth.

Anyone noticed this noise, and perhaps had a word with the loco crew to see if they have an answer?

Any maching leaves surface marks, which will be VERY small and almost certainly not visible. It was like having your car engine's crankshaft reground: you then had to run the engine in to remove all the microscopic peaks and troughs left by the process. At a larger scale, that's the same reason that 6100 is at the Railway now.

Great Video Sharpo. I went to Bridgnorth today, to see if I could get some photos of 46100. However, it was stabled in the worst possible place, next to the coal bunker, pointing northwards. I'll have to wait until the gala next week, that's if too many people aren't in the way. :-/

Yes, I could hear it clearly the far side of the valley and as I couldn't see the loco properly through the trees, I thought it was being towed by an 08. I got a better view on its return trip and could see it was running light engine.
Someone on Facebook said he had spoken to the crew and it was gland packing coming loose.
It was still making the same noise the next day, so I'm guessing that whatever it is, it just needs bedding in, not repairing.

Thanks Joe. I know it won't go down as the greatest action video of all time, but shows what test runs are all about - gently clocking up a few miles, then get the oil can out and check things over before the return run. At least it wasn't filmed at Arley, my usual haunt!

Filmed it leaving Kidder with 6 GW coaches about 11 am, still facing north, if anybody interested. A bit of info is better than nothing at all.
