After attempts to rectify the hot axle box No. 6990 Witherslack Hall experienced last night, we are saddened to announce that the locomotive will no longer be operating during our Spring Steam Gala.

No. 34027 Taw Valley will operate in its place today, with No. 7812 Erlestoke Manor taking over on Saturday and Sunday.

That's unfortunate.

As a point of interest, who ends up paying for the transport in these circumstances, on the assumption that the loco will be returning to Leicestershire for repair at it's home base. Appreciate if this can't be answered for commercial reasons, but it would be a shame if we had to meet the costs without any earnings.

I was thinking the same thing. Can't remember the details but didn't one of "our" locos go to Swanage (?) a few years ago, then not run due to problems. These things happen I suppose, but there are still transport bills to pay, no doubt hire fees would be cancelled.

6990 ran light engine to Bridgnorth this morning and went straight onto the wheel-drop where one of the bogie axles was taken out and the repairs are in hand. Loco will be running off Bridgnorth next weekend and will be on BN1 next Friday (Good Friday) so all is not lost Smile

I hope the goods doesn't run early from Bridgnorth on Sunday. Arrived at Bewdley in plenty of time today and was surprised to see it already in the station.

This was because 6430 should have been on the goods today [Saturday] at 0845 but had a problem with collapsed firebars on disposal last night; 2857 was booked to go light engine at 0825, and since there was no way 6430 would be available to take the freight on time, 2857 did so in its 0825 path; 6430 was repaired, and sent south on the back of the 1045 passenger train so that it could take up the rest of its diagram.

So, to summarise:

7802 ‘Bradley Manor’ succumbed before the Gala with a persistent leak in an inaccessible area of the outer firebox which the owners report will take a couple of weeks to fit.

Visiting Witherslack Hall was found during the week before the gala to have a hot fireman’s side trailing bogie axlebox. It is being repaired and is anticipated to be in action over the Easter weekend instead.

Another visitor, 6430 had a problem with collapsed firebars on disposal on Friday. 6430 was repaired, and sent south on the back of the 1045 passenger train the next morning so that it could take up the rest of its diagram.

1501 had suffered a broken spring on arrival back on shed on Saturday night and it will miss the Sunday of the Gala

1450 failed on arrival back on shed on Saturday night with a collapsed grate and a repair is being attempted

4566 is reported on the Sunday to have suspected piston ring trouble...

Anyone run over any black cats?

Patrick
