I understand that today is the 50th anniversary of the end of steam hauled trains on BR Western Region.

23 January 1955.
Tomorrow marks the 60th anniversary of the York to Bristol Express taking the curve at Sutton Coldfield station at too high a speed causing a derailment. 17 fatalities and 25 injured.

I believe services to and from Oxford worked by Southern Region steam locomotives continued well into 1966. Nearer home, a freight hauled by no.7029 Clun Castle operated most weekdays between Bordesley, Birmingham and Banbury during May and June 1966, the last few miles between Fenny Compton and Banbury being Western Region territory at that time.

11th May 1984

D1013 Western Ranger was the first SVR train into Kidderminster (yard) , by permission of BR, with the 6 ton steam crane for track laying associated with the building of new Kidderminster Town station.

[Note: station opened 30th July 1984]

From 09 September 1963

The line closed to passengers between Shrewsbury and Bewdley, some 54 years ago.
