It may be of interest to some rolling stock aficionados on here that GWR Fruit C Van 2815 has been purchased by Hampton Loade Station Fund for static use as a store at Hampton Loade. This is to replace Caledonian wagon 304543 which is in a poor condition and is planned to be relocated shortly.

2815 comes from Rowden Mill station in Herefordshire where it has been preserved for the past 20 years. It is due to arrive on the railway next week at Kidderminster.

Caledonian Railway wagon 4543, later 304543 with the LMS, has now been emptied and is ready to leave Hampton Loade. Built in 1910 and later used on the Cadbury internal railway system, it is affectionately known by many of the staff here as the 'Cadbury van'.
304543 has been at Hampton Loade since the late 60s, so is sure to be missed when it leaves us soon for its next chapter in preservation.

Thanks for sharing Smile

We're not sure when it will be leaving yet, I'll post on here and Facebook when we know.

I think I have been told it is going by rail to Kidderminster - dead slow and strapped up to secure the cracked sole bar.

Road from HL would be very difficult indeed, for a start a lorry could get nowhere near 304543 to load it and would never get under the road bridge with it.

One other suggestion that has been made is to crane 304543 out of the siding onto a wagon in the loop to leave that way, but there would be loading gauge issues depending on where it is unloaded.

Whichever way it leaves it will be very interesting to watch!

Yes there would be little merit in taking it to Bewdley North!

Don't worry, jokes like that have been made by everyone at Hampton Loade way too many times over the past year or so!

They're leaving together as far as I am aware. Neither have a bright future on the SVR, so if they can be preserved somewhere else where they'll be looked after I'm sure that's for the best.

304543 will leave Hampton Loade around 15th March, we have been told. A little later than expected but we are ready for it to go.

Ferryhill Railway Centre in Aberdeen, but this is subject to confirmation.

Thanks, Sam. probably quite appropriate given their ancestry, but sad considering the time they have been with us.

304543 is confirmed to be leaving Hampton Loade on 10th March. At this time a shunt will take place so the order of vehicles in the siding at Hampton Loade will be as follows: BH end - 3467 Fruit D - 2426 Churchward Toplight - 2815 Fruit C - 66 Tool Van - KR end.

The average age of vehicles in the siding will rise from 92 years to 85!

Today at Hampton Loade we said goodbye to the Caledonian Van, which has been used as a store van for 30 years. It is going to a new home in Scotland, and successful made it to Kidderminster. It did require some strapping up before being moved. Well done to the Carriage and Wagon Team which moved it.
