Commemorating 40 years since the end of Class 52s on British Rail. The scheduled diesel services will run with heritage Class 52 diesel-hydraulic locomotives D1062 'Western Courier' and D1015 'Western Champion'. Timetable C in operation. Normal fares apply and the Annual Family Pass is valid.

There seems to be a mis-match on Friday 27th, as the Special Event information says Table C is in operation while the website calendar says it's Table B.

The 27th is the Saturday, not the Friday; the weekend is Sat - Mon 27th - 29th, table C each day.

It has been pointed out elsewhere that 40 years since the end of Class 52s on British Rail is February 2017.

At 27th August 1976 there were 23 Westerns still in service* (and I, aged 14, was busy chasing round after them)

If my memory serves me well, I think it was the 23rd Feb 1977 the last Westerns ran with D1013 Western Ranger and D1023 Western Fusilier. I saw them come through Bristol Temple Meads. I was 15 years old at the time. From 1974 and 1976 I quite frequently visited Reading to see the Westerns. Also, I remember them on the BHM to PAD service.

Perhaps celebrating this anniversary early, rather than next February is sensible. The weather is likely to be better in August, and the daylight certainly longer. Also keeps the event away from the Spring Diesel Gala.

Diesel events are popping up more frequently now. It is perhaps a side-effect of having the new TMD at KDR.

D1013/23/41 are out of traffic. Not sure about 1010/48?

From the SVR web site today
http://www.svr.co.uk/SEItem.aspx?a=111

On August 27th, 28th and 29th we head to the seaside! Our Western Weekend will see a mix of steam and diesel locomotives in service, representing trains of a bygone era that used to travel to the coast with thousands of holidaymakers onboard.

The scheduled diesel services will run with heritage Class 52 diesel-hydraulic locomotives D1062 'Western Courier' and D1015 'Western Champion', alongside a number of additional shuttle services. The event commemorates 40 years since the final run of this class of locomotive in normal service on British Rail.

Alongside the diesels, three steam locomotives will be in service, representing designs that would have worked along Class 52s in the 1960s operating holiday specials from inner cities to coastal resorts.

Attractions include
+ Two Class 52 'Westerns' in service (subject to availability)
+ Three Western Region steam locomotives (subject to availability)
+ Recreation of famous named-trains
+ Evening 'Western Wanderer' train hauled by No. D1015, departing from Kidderminster at 7.45pm
+ Ukulele band performing on the Railway

Normal fares apply. Annual Family Pass valid.

Note the special timetable being advertised with a Saturday evening service from Kidderminster.

For operational reasons CS3 had to change platforms at Bridgnorth on the first run.. This delayed TV going for coal which delayed our departure. With a tight timetable this delay affected other services so even with shortening breaks etc and leaving BH to time we were held at HL waiting for a train we had delayed earlier in the day.

I suspect there were a multitude of small problems as well as that; it was one of those days when no time seemed to be made up at all. Despite the late running for much of the day, it was only the last two crossings at HL where trains were waiting for any length of time - i.e. trains were being delayed both ways, rather than the usual case of Up trains waiting for delayed Down services.

I had TV for the morning trip and we handed it over, as scheduled at 1335hrs at BY, so we were running well up till then.

I didn't plan it so it was just good fortune that I was at Arley when the Westerns crossed on Monday.
