With the departure of the two EE type 1 locos, do we have a "thunderbird" diesel at KDR? Or would it be an 08/09?

(My "diesel" knowledge is minimal, so apologies if there is an obvious answer ! Wink )

I do miss the 20s, but I have let it go Smile

Pictures on Facebook show the 09 D4100 having work on a bearing. The 08s can't run at line speed.

Also some of the 50s are tarped over for the winter. 50007 and Hood are, 49 is going to be, not sure about Ark Royal (I'm not a member).

I think the 33 might be one for winter works, I seem to recall that was one of the reaons for the extended stay.

None of the above is official, Kidder diesel guys will add more I'm sure.

D1015 is serviceable I think - on the diesel roster over Christmas.
33108 was serviceable but there were reports it failed recently and I don't know if it is serviceable now.
D9551 I think is serviceable.

Not sure on others. All this info is gathered from SVR Live/Facebook and is nothing official...

Ah yes, I had overlooked D1015. On the diesel roster for what, it lacks heating? Also the DTG's plan is to replace B engine by the Spring so at some point it will be out for repairs.

The Teddy Bear is based at the north end, so is ruled out of the 'Kidder Thunderbird' title, unless it too migrates south for the winter.

I thought diesel hydraulics had a very long warm up time, which would make them unsuitable for Thunderbird duty, although that could be one of the many things I've misheard or misremembered over the years.
How long would it take to scramble a Western from cold?

I think that was what I was getting at, you need a diesel that can be started up quickly from cold, rather than "warming up" as such.

Shunting Christmas stock at Arley, both before and after Santa season.

I presume, therefore, that D1015 won't be "winterised" like the WLA do with their locomotives? Their Westerns are typically completely out of the picture for several months each year because of that.

One of the main reasons D1062 is out of action is because they are taking the opportunity to work on it over the winter in the Kidder Diesel shed. It moved to Kidder yesterday for that work to be done.
As shown on svrlive "This includes "B" end engine change and bogie life extension work. There will be other work carried out on top of these projects."

Looking at our locos status board here is an up to date list.

D1015 available, one engine only. booked to work ECS 26/11/17.
50049 available
33108 available
12099 available
D3022 available
D4100 available

09107 is having main gen/bearing repairs not D4100
all other loco's at KR including D1062 are either under repair or stored for the winter. D9551 is available at BN as far as I am aware.
