Web admin note: Previous story line on http://forum.svra.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2342
[PJ January 2018].

Apologies if I have missed this elsewhere on the site. Fares for 2018 are now online at http://www.svr.co.uk/Fares.aspx. Interesting to note the adult/senior fare is now the same, with no discount as in previous years. FOTL adult/senior at £21 OTD or £19.50 pre-book.[/url]

Dear JHope, can you tell me how much the fare has gone up by since last year?

Strange what can still be found online.
http://www.svr.co.uk/pdf/Brochures/SVR%20Timetable%202017%20(Preview).pdf

Adults
£19.80 or Pre-book £18.80

Seniors (60+)
£18.80 or Pre-book £17.30

A simple answer is £2.20 for Seniors, or £1.20 adults for on the day tickets. Certainly a big jump in price for the 60+.

I haven't a timetable handy for 2017 so presume that was correct.

That agrees with archived copies of the website from 2017, sharpo (e.g. link).

When purchasing a single ticket in advance still cost you more than the on the day price with the £1.75 booking fee. Why is the booking fee so high?

I am surprised that there are not many comments about no reduction in any fares for senior citizens...it is not just the FOTL which cost £18.80 last year now £21.00, a rise of roughly 12% but all local fares........apparently there will be a SC discount for special events...........big deal. Shorter journeys i.e HY to AY never had SC discount last year......

Are we trying to alientate the 60+ visitors as sure we will get some adverse comments on this once it is known..............I know costs increase and the SVR has a lot of full time & part time staff who have to be paid but surely one day if fares keep going up and up then more and more visitors will be deterred..

As a senior I am not happy our cheaper fare has gone.

I notice the full line ticket automatically includes entrance to the Highley Centre. Could a new ticket that excludes the Centre be introduced? That would bring the fare down by a fiver to £16. A much more affordable cost to us old wrinklies and I dare say also many families struggling with their finances.

I certainly donít mind paying the same fair as younger people. I am sure there are as many poorer younger people as there are poor pensioners. Iíll be off to the SVR in March spending some of my winter fuel allowance on A few pints of Bathams. Not trying to be flippant but why do many pensioners seem to want a discount when they donít really need it. Just going out now shopping ( with my free bus pass)

Maybe there is a case for more Senior Citizens to be encouraged to join as members?

If I read the figures correctly the difference between the "child", ie "members" fare (on the day) is now £7.

Senior citizen membership was £17 last year, so as a guess lets say £18 in 2018.

So after three visits you would be then better-off being a member, and you get SVR News, and now, a free tea or coffee each month for ten months, the latter being worth around £25 if you manage a visit each month between February and November

You could produce a negative argument against this line of thought, but surely what we want is passenger numbers, and hopefully their "collateral spend"... if that is the correct jargon!

Final thought, retired persons more likely to visit mid-week an fill some of those quieter services away from the school holidays.
Our marketing however, in common with many tourist attractions tends to be family/young children orientated. I am sure the marketing community knows best....

Fare enough! lol. At least most 60+ people know how to spell. One spelling error that you regularly see that winds me up is using the word of instead of have. I should of.........instead of I should have. Even seen teachers spell it the wrong way. What chance do the kids have?

Seniors will still get a discount at special events. For instance, at the spring gala the senior one day rover is £27.00 instead of £29.00.

Fairy Nuff, lives at the bottom of the garden!

That "of" and "have" thing is irritating.

Always remember a sign "Rocking horse's for sale". They do' learn 'em proper no more!

Drifting OT I know, but what I find incredible is the scrolling news banner on the BBC News channel, and how often you see a spelling mistake, or bad grammar/use of words.
Anyway, who is for enrolling more "SC" visitors as members?

(I think the correct phrase I should have used in my previous post was "discretionary spend" !)
