The Friends of Locomotive 4930 Hagley Hall are delighted to confirm that the Heritage Lottery Fund have awarded £95,000 to the Severn Valley Railway Charitable Trust, to use for the restoration of locomotive 4930. This news provides an incredible boost to the funds available for the overhaul, and will allow work to start soon on the long task of returning the locomotive to operational condition.

Our thanks go to the Heritage Lottery Fund for making this grant, which will enable a successful conclusion to our long-held ambitions. Also, thanks to the SVR Charitable Trust, and in particular, to Shelagh Paterson, for all the hard work involved in formulating the HLF bid. Thanks are also due to Duncan Ballard and Ian Walker of SVR Engineering Services for the provision of detailed information in support of the application.

This award in no way diminishes the amazing work of our loyal band of supporters who have donated to the restoration fund over several years, and whose contribution and dedication to the scheme has been recognised by the HLF as one of the major factors in making such a large award.

We will now be consulting with partners in the restoration to finalise the practical ways forward. More information will appear here in due course.

Whilst we are now well on the way to achieving our long-held goal, we still have some way to go along the final furlong, and we hope that our supporters will continue to support us as the restoration progresses.

Does this mean the Holdings Co now could not sell it if they fell on hard times? Unlike 45110.

I don't know, but I think it's unlikely.

Many HLF grants are to the owners, for the restoration of the loco itself. IIUIC this is different: it's a grant to the Charitable Trust to support the Apprenticeships, who happen to be working on the loco.

There's been no word from SVR(H) of a restrictive covenant either.

All guesswork, you understand

Edit: I also don't know the current position re the letter from the GM published (I think) in 2010, with an offer from the railway to the FHH that they would have an equity stake in return for their fundraising.

I'm happy to wait and see the outcome of all of this

Working Bridgnorth signalbox today, Hagley was shunted round to the boiler shop this afternoon.
Is this the start?

Its not the end, Its not even the beginning of the end but it could be the end of the beginning!

According to a knowledgeable person on Facebook its moved to allow the FO4930 to remove the tubes. I would say further progress as the start happened a while ago, just maybe a bit more behind the scenes.

I was aware that "background" activity had been going on, particularly fundraising and with the new tender, but is this the first evidence of work on the loco itself?
Power to the apprentices elbows !!!

4930 Progress Report

10th July

Good progress has been made in the past fortnight, on both locomotive and tender.

Group members have set to work on the locomotive, burning tube ends to allow removal of boiler tubes. All tube end burning has now been completed. Other components have also been removed for storage.

Major advances have taken place with the tender, now that the SVRís steam crane is again operational following its heavy overhaul. The steam crane was in use on 8th July, its first duty being to lift 4930ís tender tank from the chassis. The tender tank has been examined and found to be unfit for further use, and it will now be stored pending disposal. A new Collett-design tender tank has now been ordered as part of the restoration project.

On 9th July, following a comprehensive repositioning of stock at Bridgnorth Works, and after initial de-scaling and rust-removal by volunteers, 4930ís tender chassis frame was lifted from its wheels and placed on accommodation bogies. The tender frame has now been moved inside the works, where further activity can now begin in earnest. The wheelsets will now have their condition examined and assessed for further use.

Ah, the joy of a web site where you can view the images without having to "log in" or whatever. So much better than that other "stuff".

Work has continued at Bridgnorth, preparing components for welding to the tender chassis. In our last update, the new dragbox was shown in position at the front of the tender chassis, but this has now returned to the workbench, where apprentice Max Greene has been busy finishing the structure, and drilling the necessary holes in it.

Meanwhile, the new frame plates have now been temporarily welded in position ready for the impending permanent welding session.

Further good news has now arrived from Adam Dalgleish Engineering Ltd., of Stockton who are constructing the new Collett-style tender tank for 4930. Following many weeks work on the technical drawings, fabrication of the steelwork has now begun.
