It would be great if she is put in the engine house, looking at the pictures of last time she was waiting for overhaul..

Not sure if there is a spare "Engine House" space at present. 45110 replaced Hagley Hall.
But you are right in principle, out of use engines are so much better off under cover. We all know about the alleged additional costs incurred in the past overhauling engines that stood outside for years.

No alleged about it. 75069 a current (not past) case of point.

Sorry, the word "alleged" was not required. It is a fact.
Hopefully though, 75069 is the last of such "outside stored/out of ticket" situations.

I was trying to recall the additional cost figure quoted for I think 43106 some years ago, and it was substantial. But I still cannot recall the figure....

A quote from NatPres:

Quote:
pre engine house both 4930 & 7819 were stored outside for an appreciable period before being made to look presentable for more recent display. The full effects of this will only be known at stripdown time

I recall a figure of 70k additional work on 43106 attributed to open storage.

Regards

Patrick

If that is correct that's quite a staggering extra amount that had to be found

Whilst I don't know what state it was in when it came out of service first time round, 43106's tender body was so shot when the latest overhaul took place that it was completely replaced. That can't have been cheap!

I recall that an amount is now charged to the traffic department's accounts and credited to those of The Engine House, in order to recognise the savings in overhaul costs. It's an internal accounting measure but how much it is, and how it is calculated, I'm afraid I don't know.

It seems that 5164 is a popular engine and has also been a very reliable performer. Is that taken into account when the works lists are drawn up? Running costs are so important nowadays and these 2-6-2 tanks have the advantage of not only having no tender to tow but because they have a guiding truck at both ends, should also be kinder to the track than a 2-6-0, 4-6-0 or 2-8-0 when running in reverse.

Could a comment like this lead the way to variable access charges betwixt P-way and Operating depts? Wink

If people are willing to make unsolicted donations for the overhaul of 5164, it suggests that a 'Friends of 5164' organisation could raise funds fairly quickly to bring forward its return to service with much of the work being done elsewhere, as in the case of 7802. Do the owners have any objection to this?

A sad day yesterday with 5164 bowing out, but she went in style gleaming clean (well done Tom et al) and with at times some spirited operation. It was quite poignant at Hampton Loade exchanging tokens with her and watching her train's tail lamp recede out of sight.
